Today I got up, wrote my database exam, did OK on it, then
came home. The ride home came with an awesome realization; Winter is over. It
was warm out, and all I wanted to do was drive around with the windows down
blaring fast heavy metal as the air rushes past my face. I’m excited for summer, it will
be an enjoyable one to say the least.
Today all of the schools IT teachers were clearing out their office so it could be renovated. Rather than store away a lot of their stuff during the renovation, they decided they would put it in the hall and let students pick out what they want. I arrived late to the scavenger party, so I missed the material which was truly relevant to my interests. I did pick up a book titled ‘The art of Unix programming’ which seems like it could be interesting. I also got dozens of IT magazines. Information Security, InfoWorld, InformationWeek, essentially years upon years worth of bathroom reading material. Nothing like learning the business while doing your business.
Topic of The Day: Candy
“Candy says I've come to hate my body
and all that it requires in this world” – Velvet Underground
This is a line from the Velvet Underground song called ‘Candy Says’. My interpretation is that by shoving stuff down my throat when I know it isn’t good for me is doing a disservice to myself as well as showing ignorance to what my body needs to thrive.
Since shortly after Christmas I have been on a healthy eating kick. I wanted to
both look and feel better, and correcting my eating habits was the first step
in that. Candy was never really one of my major vices, although if it was there
it wouldn’t be there for long. That line from a Velvet Underground song, or
sung by Dax Riggs if you want to hear my favorite rendition of it, kind of
stretches beyond the realm of candy for me.
My eating habits were horrendous before I started this. For supper I would throw a Delicio Pizza in the oven. I would eat half of that for supper and stash the other half in the back of the fridge for breakfast on the following day. I didn’t touch salads or vegetables. I’d eat out on almost a weekly basis, whether that was Wendy’s or A&W or whatever. When it was warm out I would start up the BBQ and make burgers or sausages every second day, usually making enough to reheat and make other meals. It was bad, and it went on for years.
As of now, I pretty much exclusively eat veggie-pitas. I do my best to avoid snacking between meals, and I run on the treadmill whenever I get the time to do so. What can I say, life is hectic. So far I have lost 10lbs, which isn’t much but is a start which I am happy with. I expect that figure to keep climbing over the summer when I can start biking and swimming in a routine. I find running on the treadmill tedious, and can only ever do it as long if I have something to hold my attention, like an episode of Lost or a movie.
I havn’t been in shape since before I was in the first or second grade. There is this picture of me on the wall in the living room, this little skinny blonde kid wearing Looney Toons sweatpants. Looking at that picture gives me hope, “I was there once. I can be there again.”
